ReWorking Ghosts

You have heard me say this before, I had planned on doing something different, but got distracted by another image.  When I planned what I was going to rework today, this image did not come to mind.

Ghostly Klara - OriginalI took this image 18 months ago.  I used my neutral density filter to give me a longer exposure so Klara would look like a ghost.  The neutral density filter I had was crap and turned everything pink.  I have learned so much since this image that I am more confident about getting rid of the pink.

Ghostly Klara - ReworkedToday I spent a lot more time on it.  I tried to get rid of the pink tinge, and I think that worked.  You, hopefully, will notice that the image has been cropped.  I think that works much better and maybe I could have done it more.  I didn’t try too hard to get rid of the white outside, but I am not too fussed with it.

I did some blurring with it and changed the lighting inside the shed to try and highlight Klara standing next to the window.  I attempted to bring out the detail without it being too dominant in the image.  I much prefer the rework.

Ghostly Klara - Color Efex 1Because I can, I played with the image in Color Efex.  I think the above image was done with the preset Paper Toner.  I like the effect.  I had done one with her in color and the rest in this tone.

Ghostly Klara - Color Efex combineYou can decide what you think.  I haven’t quite made up my mind yet.

Ghostly Klara - Color Efex 2I can’t remember what I used with this.  It was with Color Efex again.  I don’t mind this at all.  It is soft and the colours are really nice.  Though, not a lot of difference to the reworked image.

I do think this is a much better rework than the original.  I am sure I put this image on the blog about 18 months ago, but I can’t find it anywhere.  Maybe I just thought I had.

Every time I go up I mean to do it again, but then stuff happens and I don’t, but I will do it again.  So much fun.  It is nice to do images sometimes that are just for fun.

Inside the Asylum

When I put up the exterior image of Larundel Mental Asylum I had quite a few requests from you to show you the interior. I didn’t really see much of the inside, but I do have some images for you, though only one today.  Hopefully I am enjoying my weekend in Harrietville and you will be happy with this image.

Interior Plain

This interior is in one of the buildings and upstairs.  It is quite a mess, pretty much as you would expect.  I can imagine this would have been a lovely room once.  It was a big room, some sort of recreation room, and there are offices, or were, down each end.  There were lovely windows with some nice features in them.  In a room off to the left there has been a fire and you can see daylight through the roof.

I am not sure about the processing of this image.  I do think you will end up seeing it in one of the Friday reworks.  Though, because I could, I tried the image out in Silver Efex and Color Efex, first Silver Efex.

Interior in Silver EfexI cannot lie, I think this is much better.  I put a coffee tone over the top and burned the edges.  I like the way it directs your eye onto the floor.

Interior in Color EfexThis is after the Old Photo preset was used from Color Efex.  I liked the lighting in this one and the way it has highlighted the floor as well.

Interesting that both Silver Efex and Color Efex have given almost the same effects.  Though that is probably more my preference showing for them.

I do have some others and I will try and work on them some more for you and show you another time.

GPO Three Ways

The internet and WordPress has been buzzing with the latest news from Nik Software by Google.  I thought it was time for me to keep you up to date with what is happening.  You can now get all of their programs in a special package for $149.  That is really amazing and a fantastic deal.  So to remind you of some of their programs, today I thought I would show you an image from my early morning in the city the other day and process it with some of the software.

GPO Done with Camera Raw

I processed this image as a HDR and then put it through camera raw in Photoshop.  I darkened it a big, maybe too much looking at it now.  Though for the next images I used the undarkened image.

GPO Done with Color Efex ProThen the image was processed with Color Efex.  I love the different looks you can get.  It is really nice.  The filter sunlight was used for this one.  It has given it a lovely soft glow.  I might have to use this one more often.

GPO Done with Silver Efex ProYou don’t get points for guessing this one.  I used Silver Efex and the low structure filter preset.  I will admit that I use the low structure one the most and then make my own changes to it.

I haven’t been using the programs from Nik Software a lot lately, I have really engrossed in other work I have been doing and they weren’t needed for those.  It is nice to play with them again.  I have been playing with the HDR program a lot more.  There are some issues that I have been finding with Photomatix that I don’t really like, and often HDR Efex, in some situations works out better, though I need more time to work with it.

If you have been thinking about getting any of the programs by Nik Software by Google then now is a perfect time.  I have to say putting it altogether in one package for such a great price is a brilliant strategy.  So I hope you will go and check it out.

I did something today I haven’t done before, I opened a shop on Etsy for my postcards.   I thought it might be an easier way to get the word out about them.

It is such an interesting idea to try and sell your work.  It is a lot harder than you think it is going to be.  I am hoping that while people won’t buy a canvas print or a print, that they might consider buying a postcard.  I know I often buy them.  They can be a good way to support an artist, and you get a small thing to put up on your wall.  I have a space on my wall near my desk that I put postcards up on.

So if you would like to check out my Etsy store then click here to go and take a look around.  There are only 3 postcards there, but I will be putting up more soon, I have sent 3 more images away to be printed, so more soon.

Sorry, this weekend must just seem like product reviews, I didn’t mean it to be that way, I promise tomorrow won’t be.

Getting a Cooler Perspective

We are having some warmer weather again, so I am hiding inside with the air conditioner  and moving around isn’t great.  Best to keep as still as possible.  I decided for today’s post I would go through some of my old images and see what I had that hadn’t shown you before.  Point Lonsdale came to mind.  It cooled me down instantly.

There is also information about a contest in the post today.  Check it out.

Same Scene Different Composition – Part 2

Just over a week ago I did an image of the tower from the Manchester Unity Building and called it Part 1, I knew when I did it that I would want to try doing it again.  Stretching Up - 2nd VersionI like this version a lot better than the other one.  I did a lot more to draw out the details in the image using the blur feature and masking.  I also redid the sky.  I didn’t go all the way back to the start, but rather chose an earlier state.

I am not totally happy with this composition.  I like it in the portrait mode, though I really want to go back now and take more photos.  I think I know what I want to get now.  I feel as though I understand the building so much more now.  I know I was invited to come and take photos, but there is a point where I don’t want to wear out my welcome.  I hope they will let me come back to do the tower again.

Since I was pretty happy with how I processed the image this time, I thought it might be good to see what would happen if I used Silver Efex on it.

Stretching Up - Silver EfexTaking the colour out of it, well I thought it would ruin the image, but I don’t think it has at all.  I like how you just focus on the details and the textures in the fascade of the building.  The detail is so intricate, when I am working on it, I enlarge it a lot so I can work closer, and I get lost in the intricacies of the craftmanship.  It really is a stunning building.

Stretching Up - Color EfexThis time I used Color Efex.  It took me a while to find something that I thought would work.  I quite like the washed out look of this.  I like what it has done to the fascade.

I have left the flag pole at the top, I know some thought it was something else, but I tried it without and I didn’t like it.  I like the illusion that the tower continues up.  It seemed flat without it.

I should send some links to the Kia, the man who invited me to photograph the building and let him see some of the images I have done of it.  It has been a wonderful experience.

ReWorking a Tree in a Field

Someone recently stated that a lot of people doing digital images go way too far, of course they were nice enough to say I wasn’t one of them, but I feel I should confess that I have been in the past, take a look at this image.

One Tree Hill - OriginalAt the time I did this, I thought it was great.  I even had it printed and put it into a show last year.  This image was featured in a blog post in June 2011. It is an interesting post, it was at a time when I felt I didn’t know enough about Photoshop and I was trying to teach myself how to use it.  I think I’ve come a long way since then.

When I read the comment about digital images, I thought it would be fun to go right back and see what it would look like now if I was doing it.  Would I change much, or would I leave it pretty much as it was.

One Tree Hill - ReworkedThis time it was opened in Camera Raw and processed.  Camera Raw is a great editing tool, I don’t think I could live without it now.  You can do some amazing things in it that you just can’t do in Photoshop, or other editing software.  Though I should state that Camera Raw is part of Photoshop CS6.

When I processed it this time I wanted the moody sky to determine the atmosphere of the image.  Toning down the red of the dirt was also important, the trees were to become the focus of the image.  Some gradient was also added to darken the sky more and tone down some of the foreground.

The rework is much more natural looking, though it still has a surreal quality about it.  Of course, you knew I would use Color Efex and Silver Efex as well, I had to see what I could do in them.  Color Efex first.

One Tree Hill - Color EfexThis filter is called Monday Morning.  I am not really sure about it, according to the list it is for weddings, so maybe it would look better for people, I should try that.  I do like what it has done to the tree, and I don’t mind the overall effect, but perhaps Silver Efex would be better.

One Tree Hill - Silver EfexI do like this.  I really like the atmosphere and the mood that has been created.  The Low Key preset was used for this and the Lens Fall Off 2 Vignetting was used.  It’s interesting to see how the focus really is on the tree and the sky behind.

Which do you prefer?  I was thinking today how long it takes me to work on images sometimes, meaning, that I will do it at one time, then go back and rework it, and I know there are images that I have reworked that I will rework another time.  I suppose it is like a painter reworking a painting, sometimes it is hard to know when you are finished, or if you ever will be.

The weekend is here, and hopefully the hot weather has gone.  It hasn’t been as hot here today, but it has been very humid, I think I prefer the heat.  Humidity is fairly recent here, with what is happening to the planet we are noticing more and more humid summers.

I have plans to get out with the Nikon D5100 to take heaps of photos, I really want to see what I can do with it.  Fun weekend for me, I hope you will have a good one too.

ReWorking the Back Beach

I don’t normally do this, but I was so impressed with how this image turned out in Black and White, I had to show it first.  So now I will go back to showing the original image.

There isn’t that much wrong with this.  The sky is probably too blue and the rocks, in some places, are too yellow.  This image was first processed back in April after a trip to Sorrento back beach.  Some great images were taken, but when I was going through them, this is the one that stood out; begging to be reworked.

There isn’t a lot of difference between the two images, but I hope this one is more natural, the sky and the rocks aren’t so saturated.  This one is much better, to my eye anyway.

This one has had a filter applied to it from Color Efex.  I usually use the Classical Soft Focus, but this time I tried a different one, I applied the Sunlight filter.  It has created a nice softness to the rocks.

Out of all though, the first one is probably the best, in my opinion. It certainly has the most drama, and we can thank Silver Efex for that.  I used low key for it and did a few more adjustments.

I am in the middle of big job.  I have to go to BMX racing the next couple of days.  Not for long each day, but I have to be there.  I have been given a job to photograph the girls and women racing BMX.  It is a great job and so nice that they want photos of the girls. If you didn’t know better you would think that only boys raced, but there are lots of girls there.  It should be a great couple of days, but also tiring.
