Monochrome Madness Week 4

We have had another great response for our Monochrome Madness Challenge this week.  It’s great receiving emails all week long as images come in for me to add to the list for today’s post.  Remember, anyone can send an image and we have decided that people who don’t have blogs or websites should submit if they want to.  Really, we just want to encourage everyone to try making black and white images.

We have some people who have submitted work before, and some new people.  If you want to submit an image for next week then the instructions and guidelines are at the end of the post.

LeanneCole-princespier-20140321-3376_HDR-2My image this week.  I took this last Friday when I was out with a friend and I knew pretty much knew as I was taking it that I was going to make it a black and white image.  I didn’t take it at a great time of the day, but I hope the final results show that it didn’t matter.  I did start with a HDR and then worked from there.   I didn’t use Silver Efex, I wanted to, but I am having trouble with my computer and windows at the moment, we might be experiencing irreconcilable differences.  My husband thinks it looks like a graveyard, interesting, I can understand that.

Laura has also sent me her black and white image, another great image.

Laura has written about her image in a post on her blog, LAURA MACKY, so please take a look there if you would like more information.  Though, I hope you do and I hope you visit lots of the blogs below as well.  We had more submissions this week, and, again, a lot of variety.  It just makes my mind boggle looking at the possibilities and what you can do with Black and White.  Don’t forget if you would like to participate in our challenge, the guidelines are at the end of the post.  Please enjoy some Monochrome Madness.

Now, if you wish to participate and submit an image here is how you do it:-

  • You must email me the image you want to include and if you have a blog or website, or somewhere else, please include the link. My email address is
  • The image size should be as small as it can be, so the largest side should be 1000 pixels or less.
  • You have until the following Tuesday morning to get your entries to me.  Remember I am on Australian time, so with GMT I am +11 hours at the moment, I publish my post on Wednesday morning.
  • Remember to include a link to your blog or website.

Just to let you know also, that as soon as the challenge is published, all emails and images you have sent me are deleted from my computer.  I respect your copyright and would never keep any of the images.

    • Thanks Carol, it surprises me sometimes how many great images I get. I could do a poll but then I would be so disappointed to see how mine came last, haha.

    • You’re welcome, it is a great gallery, I love seeing what I get and then how they all look together.

  1. Beautiful monochrome images Leanne. My hat’s off to you for starting this challenge. I hope to submit one next week.

My favorite (not that I’m partial or anything) is my dear friend Laura Macky’s flower arrangement. The contrast, depth, and overall feel is top-notch in my eyes. Bravo to her!

Thanks for posting all of the beautifully creative images.

  2. Great mono shots! I may be incorrect in my thought process, but I feel like your use of contrast is great. The different shades of gray really pop!

    Thank you for sharing!

    • Thank you so much, we got some great submissions this week for the Monochrome madness challenge.

  3. Another set of beautiful images – I like that others are adding a warm or cool tone to their B&W images. I’ll be sure to check out the individual blogs. Thanks Leanne!

    • It is interesting to see how everyone does their images, I would really like it if you did, thank you Robert.

  4. leecleland says

Fabulous images as usual, great to see what everyone is making with B&W. I can’t believe you are into week 4 – how time flies!

    • Oh yes, it does at times. They are all great images, I love getting the emails to see what people have sent. Thanks Lee.

  5. rkpowers says

Another great group of shots. Thanks for giving this forum to share.

    • It is another great group, including you. You are welcome, I realise it is something that my blog is good for, so I am happy to do it, I also love seeing what everyone does.

    • Thank you, I think black and white does that, it is also great getting all the images from so many other people as well, really makes it a great post.

    • Thanks Al (is that your real name ;)), it is great having so many people submit images, I love seeing what comes in.

  6. These are incredible!! I’m not at my computer but I can’t wait to view these tonight. It’s such wonderful diversity!

    • I agree Laura, I love seeing what people send. I know I say this every week, but I think we are doing something wonderful.

  7. Your image Leanne is stunning as usual. I can see the cemetery your husband speaks of. The sky and clouds surrounding this image are lovely too. I look forward to this post every week! In search of a new subject to turn into monochrome :)

    • Thank you Carrie, I was happy with this one. It is a great one, I am always on the lookout for that photo that I will think will be great in B&W and I really love that other people are enjoying it as well. Thanks for your submissions Carrie, I really appreciate the effort, and your great images.

  8. Great set of images Leanne, I really look forward to seeing the madness each week. The bar seems to be raised as the weeks go by. I must shoot something for next weeks :-)

    • That is great to Ed, and that would be even better if you submitted an image. I love getting them. You have almost 7 years to get something to me.

  9. They all are wonderful images and shots! Very inspiring. Thanks for running the challenge, Leanne. :)

    • You are welcome Inge, I think it is a good thing to do in return for all the support I get. We got another great bunch of image, and you are right, they are very inspiring, always great to see what people submit, such a variety.

  10. Another beautiful gallery of B&W. I think you and I will be competing for last place in that poll. :)

    • I don’t think so, I know I would be a long way down, haha, I love the simplicity of your image, so don’t talk badly about it. Thank you for sending in an image, and I hope you will do it again. :)

  12. Hi Leanne and thanks again for hosting another great week of MM :)
What a fantastic challenge and each week is a real feast for the eyes…
Such amazing work and beautiful images.

  13. Awesome Leanne! Really fabulous images. This is so fun to see new work by so many every week! Thank you ever so much for including me and for doing this! A true inspiration! Blessings, Robyn

    • I know just what you mean Robyn, it is fantastic, I love it. You are very welcome, anytime you want to send an image, do it. Thanks Robyn.

  14. Jackie Saulmon Ramirez says

I see what you husband was saying about looking like a graveyard. What were those, stumps or posts? You can see it has a luxury liner to the left so it can’t be a graveyard. This is interesting. It does tend to get a person thinking more about the image and picking out details. :)

    • They were part of a pier Jackie, they have taken the top bit off and left the stumps, no doubt they will rot and disappear one day. That is great to hear Jackie, one friend said it looked like the ship was about to sail into bad weather with those clouds. Thanks Jackie.

  15. Sonel says

Absolutely stunning images Leanne and love the shot you took of the ship. The sepia effect looks great! :D ♥ Hugs ♥

    • Thank you Sonel, we got some great images from people this week, actually we always seem to. Thanks for what you said about mine too. :)

  16. I adore black and white photography. Some of my favorites are ones I took in b & w. The ones here are just lovely. The while of the lilies really pops.

    • Thank you Renee, it is great having so many people send images for this MMC, perhaps you might send one too, the more the merrier, as the saying goes.

  17. jamiechristinephotography says

Great work! Love this weekly challenge. :-)

  18. thank you so much for including me Leanne!! Damn, I didn’t fix the title of my piece!! I am of the type when all else fails read the instructions and remember to tidy up when you’re done etc etc. :D

    • That is okay Cybel, I don’t think that matters too much, I don’t have titles for mine either, Thanks for submitting your images.

    • Thank you Em, I was really happy with that, as soon as I took, I knew it was going to be my black and white image for MMC.
They are all good, I love getting the images and seeing what people are sending.

    • We are getting some great images, I hope it isn’t putting people off from submitting. It is good to see how many people are doing great images out there.

  20. What a wonderful idea, and such a nice way to meet like minded people. The pictures are lovely, and visiting the other blogs was a really nice experience. Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog, :-).

    • Thank you for sharing your experience with this post, that is exactly what it is meant to be about. It is also good for pushing up to do more black and white images.

    • Thank you,
I hope you don’t mind me saying, but I would prefer not to get the URL attached to your comment. I can’t decide if this is spam or an honest comment.

      • Iam sorry. That is a link to my website. I am still new to this lol. I am in the process of my own business and I was wanting to get my name out there. Is there a way I can remove it from your post? If so I would be glad to remove it. If you have any tips or advice then please let me no.
        Kind regards

      • It is a hard one Gavin, when you leave a comment, your name is a link, so if people want to go to your blog they will. People don’t tend to press links, that is my experience. Look at lots of blogs, get involved in the WP community is the best advice I can give you, though I am trying to run a business too, but the blog doesn’t really generate a lot of business. I hope that helps, I can remove it, but will leave it for now.

  22. Thanks for posting my photo. And all these great B&W’s. It’s a pleasure to visit all these wonderful photo-blogs!

    • You are welcome Truels, thanks for submitting your wonderful images. I hope you will do it again. I think that is one of the best things about the challenge. :)

  24. Thank you for posting my picture. I absolutely love “There was a time.” Laura’s is another beautiful shot as well. There’s so much talent in the world! :)

    • You are very well Marsha, thanks for submitting it. I could have put some of the others in, but I deleted all the emails, so please feel free to do it again. There is a lot of talent out there. :)

      • I’ll take a look. The one I submitted and you posted looked great compared to my other ones, but compared to the ones you posted…. hmmm… not so much. I like the ones that have more contrast like the one Laura did. Or in the typewriter case, there was more detail up close and personal. The lightening was fantastic. I’ll check out some cloud pictures I just took. They might look perfect. :)

      • I remember there was another image, an architectural one that was pretty good too, I might see if it is still the bin for my email.
Yes, if you find something else, that would be great. It is a great challenge, I am certainly learning heaps from it. :)

      • I agree, and people seem to love getting their work displayed on your site. I know I feel honored! :)

      • I am happy to do it, it is nice to be able to host it, I think my blog is very good for that, it is nice to share it. :)

  25. Here we have again an amazing gallery from very talent photographer, my pick this week has to be the leaf.
